Help Us Reach Our Giving Tuesday Goal of $5,000

We believe every adult in Ottawa County deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. At READ Ottawa, we provide free, one-on-one tutoring and supportive learning environments where adults can learn at their own pace, without judgement and with genuine encouragement.

Why Literacy Matters

Improved literacy changes lives in meaningful, everyday ways:

  • Reading a bedtime story to a child

  • Filling out a job application with confidence

  • Understanding medical instructions

  • Communicating at work

  • Continuing education

  • Feeling proud of your own voice

Literacy is dignity. Literacy is opportunity. Literacy is empowerment.

Learner Stories

When a neighbor grows, our whole community grows stronger. Your support helps make stories like this possible.

Hamid.jpg

Meet Hamid

Hamid immigrated to the United States from Sudan in 2014 and came to READ Ottawa soon after his arrival. Through READ, Hamid was able to pass his driver's test and become a US Citizen. He is working with READ to improve his workplace knowledge and skills, and his tutor Paul says of his student: “Hamid has flourished in his communications skills. It has been a pleasure to watch him grow.”

Meet Nassima

Nassima moved to Michigan in 2014 to be with her husband, and they have two children. She likes READ Ottawa because the tutoring program is flexible, tailoring meetings with her tutor to both of their schedules. Through READ, she has gained confidence talking with her children's teachers and the skills needed to improve future job opportunities.

Meet Ana

Ana came to READ Ottawa for US Citizenship test prep assistance and displayed incredible perseverance and dedication along the way. The citizenship test is a hefty undertaking, and Ana worked hard to schedule her tutoring sessions while working around her third-shift job and attending special events at school with her three children. To make matters more challenging, Ana also experienced two difficult life events right before her scheduled exam. Ana, however, was determined to stay the course and she PASSED her exam!

“READ improved my reading and writing skills, helped me pass my driver’s test, helped me become a US citizen, and Read helped me get better paying jobs.”
